CORFU. The water issue was the main subject matter of Monday΄s municipal council meeting. Friday΄s meeting is likely to be postponed due to municipal councillors leaving for Thessaloniki International Fair.

On Monday, the fourth accountability meeting of Central Corfu municipal council lasted two hours. The main subject matter was the water issue but no one became any the wiser as the responses given by both mayor and president of  DEYAK to G. Karidi and T. Metallinos were vague outlines and very general. No one was able to give an answer regarding the request that the mayor submitted to the Prime Minister during his election campaign, for the emergency 10 million euro financial assistance.

Summer has come to an end, money has not appeared while the answer given by the Prime Minister is that the matter will be looked at from scratch.

In September, as has been repeatedly stated, a bill concerning the water issue is about to be tabled. As far as the islands are concerned, a new PLC is about to be responsible for this matter. This PLC will start from scratch and the debts of the abolished DEYA will charge the corresponding O.T.A.

In view of this situation, the proposal to disengage the Central Corfu Municipality from DEYAK is going to be introduced at the next meeting of the municipal council, by establishing, as in North Corfu, an individual business. Consequently, the remaining partner of the indebted intermunicipal business will continue to be the troubled - as regards water - municipality of South Corfu.

The meeting was scheduled for Friday 6 September, but is going to be postponed due to municipal councillors leaving for Thessaloniki International Fair.
