10th Corfu Old Town Trail on 23 September
CORFU. Since the first event in 2013 about 500 athletes have participated each year.
The 10th Corfu Old Town Trail will be held on Saturday 23 September and it is being co-organised by the Central Corfu Municipality and the Corfu Mountain Trail.
THE CORFU OLD TOWN TRAIL is a city trail that takes place every year at the end of the tourist season (September-October) with distances of 14km and 7km, passing through both Corfu fortresses, as well as the two palaces (Asian Art and Mon Repo).
The route of the 14km race starts at Liston Square, going through St. Spyridon Square, crossing Nikiforou Theotoki Street and then the hill of the New Fortress, continuing inside the fortified part of the old town. It passes the Jewish quarter heading towards the Old Town Hall (San Giacomo), the Duomo (Catholic church), and the historic neighbourhood of Porta Remounda with its many alleys. The route continues in Paleopolis (Mon Repos), where the ancient Corfu worship centre is located, as well as the old villa of the English commissioner (Frederick Adams) granted to King George I. later and now a museum.
It returns along the wide shore walk of Garitsa Bay and through the Old Fortress, the Venetian masterpiece. The route continues through the People's Garden in front of the Palace (Asian Museum), and enters the labyrinthine streets of Corfu Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage) before finishing in Liston.
The 6 km route starts together with the 14 km route until Porta Remounda but then turns to the left to enter the Old Fortress without going to Paleopolis and Garitsa Bay, and follows the last part of the 14 km route to finish in Liston Square as well.
Since the first event in 2013 about 500 athletes have participated each year.
