CORFU. The church, which is a unique historical and ecclesiastical monument, is closing today for maintenance work on the outstanding murals and rare icons.
Corfu ND MP Stefanos Gikas visited the Agios Athanasios Church, which will be closing from today, Thursday 19 January for maintenance and improvement work. The work is the responsibility of the Ministry of Culture and Sport and is being funded by the Ionian Islands Regional ESPA Programme.
Statement from Stefanos Gikas:
"I was happy to be at the service led by the Reverend Metropolitan of Bresthenes Theoklitos at Agios Athanasios Church in Ano Korakiana today.
The church, which is a unique historical and ecclesiastical monument, is closing tomorrow for maintenance work on the outstanding murals and rare icons. Restoration work will be carried out on the church and the neighbouring olive press, which will be converted into a cultural centre, and the surrounding grounds.
The budget for the project, which is being funded by the Ionian Islands Regional ESPA Programme, is over €700,000 and its implementation is the responsibility of Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities.
I am certain that on completion of the work this impressive church will become an ecclesiastical monument attracting many visitors. I wish every success to those involved in this important work."
