CORFU. The proposals for the management of mobility was presented to the bodies today, as part of the beginning of the third consultation.

The second stage of the Central Corfu Municipality's Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is being completed with the third consultation, at the end of which the final plan will be drafted.

This plan was presented on 14 December to the network of bodies and today it was presented to the public at the Municipal Theatre. It will include interventions aimed at gradually reducing the use of cars in the Central Corfu Municipality and shifting to greener forms of transport.

Interventions

The proposal includes two levels, the strategic one and the operational one, which are connected to each other. The first level sets the objectives of the programme (network's cost-effectiveness, environmental sustainability, accessibility, road safety and quality of life), while the second level focuses on the specification of the strategic level's objectives.

The interventions included in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan range from the redevelopment of Corfu's historic town centre to the full support of alternative forms of transport. More specifically, it includes provisions for pavements, cycle paths and accessibility for visually impaired people and people with mobility problems.

Based on the proposals made for the changes to the road network, adjustments to the public transport timetables are foreseen, as well as the creation of three new municipal transport lines. Plans to support electromobility (according to the current legislation, 40 recharging points are required for the Central Corfu
Municipality) and other alternative forms of transport are also included.

The plan is part of an overall EU effort to achieve a greener future in a way that is also economically sustainable. The plan will be developed within 15 years and hopefully by the end of this period and with the implementation of the traffic model in combination with other measures, Corfu can see an improvement in traffic and environmental conditions.
