CORFU. Final study to be ready around the end of May - There are several stages left until its final implementation.
The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, on which the Central Corfu Municipality has invested to solve the major traffic problem in Corfu Town, is beginning to take its final form. However, it is not expected to be implemented soon, as apart from the procedures to be followed, it also requires implementation studies for each individual action.
The deadline for submitting suggestions and comments on the draft has ended following the extension granted for the third and final public consultation.
The contractor of the project Chrysostomos Rizomiliotis had presented the initial plan in December to the municipal authority and bodies.
Stages until its implementation
The citizens and bodies' proposals have been sent to the person responsible to process them and incorporate the ones that will be accepted to the plan, before the latter takes its final form. The proposals included a vibrant and car-free historic centre with green, quiet neighbourhoods and sustainable transportation and parking areas.
As Mr. Rizomiliotis said at the time, this stage requires three months, estimating that the final roadmap for a more friendly and humane town will be completed around the end of May. The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan will be submitted to the Corfu Municipal Council and then it is required by law to be approved by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment within two months. Once approved, the final plan will be presented to the citizens at a special conference organised by the Central Corfu Municipality.
However, its implementation requires the preparation of implementation studies for each individual action, as well as the securing of funding either from state resources or through a programme. How soon the planning will be completed depends on the municipality's reflexes. In Larissa, for example, the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan was implemented in less than a year after the completion of the final study.
As it is known, this is a 15-year plan and will be implemented in three phases, which will cover the next five, ten and fifteen years of the town's operation.

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan will include works for Corfu Town Centre's redevelopment and the support of alternative forms of transportation.
However, until the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is implemented, the serious traffic problem and the lack of parking spaces, especially in summer, remain unsolved and are causing inconvenience to the citizens' daily life.
