Mayor Meropi Ydraiou welcomes Serbian school pupils

CORFU. The pupils sang traditional songs from both countries and recited poems in Greek.

The Central Corfu Mayor welcomed 45 primary school pupils from Serbia at the Old Town Hall today. The pupils are on an educational trip to the island.

The group leader is Nikola Krstic, who is Director of Education in Novi Sad, which is twinned with Corfu. Mr. Krstic passed on greetings from the Mayor Milos Vucevic and expressed his thanks for the warm welcome given to the pupils. The President of the Hellenic-Serbian Friendship Society Zeliko Popovic was also present.

During the meeting with the pupils and teachers Mayor Meropi Ydraiou congratulated the representative from the Novi Sad Municipality on organising this educational trip, which strengthens the bonds of friendship between the two peoples and is a cornerstone for reigniting historical memories and passing them on to the next generation.

The Mayor said: "Our municipality considers it our historical duty to welcome representatives from neighbouring Serbia. The two brotherly peoples have the sacred responsibility to preserve the historical memories, the common struggles and the bonds of friendship that unite us."

The Mayor thanked the members of the group for the sincere feelings of friendship that they have for the people of Corfu and expressed her hope that this fruitful cooperation continues through the systematic cultivation of our common historical and cultural bonds.
