CORFU. Although it had started a long time, with the usual snail΄s pace the project has remained unfinished and the plot has been occupied by a business΄s vehicles.
The plot of land on Eptanisou St. has turned into a parking area, as the first Central Corfu Municipal Green Spot, which was planned to open there, still has not been created.
Even though it is a small project and it would not take more than 2-3 months for it to be implemented, with the usual snail's pace nothing has been created yet. For quite some time now, vehicles of a well-known business have been on the plot.
The Deputy Mayor for Cleansing Yiannis Seremetis told Enimerosi that the businessman has been verbally notified by the Municipality to evacuate the plot. However, the vehicles have still not been removed. Also according to Mr. Seremetis, the Region is expected to restart the works.
The Region was waiting for the planning permission to be issued. Both the Deputy Mayor and the Region said that the bureaucratic procedures have been completed, but the date when the contractor will be set up again remains unknown!
What had already happened
Preparatory work, clearing and shaping of the ground has started at least twice. But both times they stopped due to bureaucratic procedures and, thus, the plot has been left without fencing.
The project is funded by the European Interreg 'Waste React' programme, in cooperation with the Ionian Islands Region.
The dispute with a neighbour also caused the project not to move forward, while the procedures for the issuance of a planning permission by the Municipality also caused a delay.
The first in Central Corfu
There was strong interest from readers and anticipation for the operation (finally) of a Green Spot for sorting at source in Corfu Town. So far, the town only has small local Green Spots operating thanks to the great efforts of volunteers.
The 565 m2 plot is located on Eptanisou St. near the Tria Gefiria junction. It is expected to serve every citizen and absorb a large amount of packaging from businesses that now ends up with the rest of the rubbish.
When it is finally completed, the Green Spot will operate with staff of the Central Corfu Municipality.
The waste streams
Within the Green Spot there will be separate containers for each waste stream to be collected in: paper, plastic bottles, aluminium cans, glass bottles, wooden packaging, composite packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, portable batteries and accumulators.
Items that can be reused (which are not waste) such as toys, clothes, fabric, shoes, small electrical devices that are still working will also be collected at the Central Corfu Green Spot.
The citizens will place the materials and objects in special bins, containers, etc. with the appropriate marking, so that their temporary storage will be made in different streams.
