Central Corfu Municipality: Free distribution of composters to members of public

Central Corfu Municipality
01 Οκτωβρίου 2024 / 12:01

CORFU. The distribution will start on Wednesday 9/10, to those who are interested in participating in the "Compost from Home" programme.

The distribution of composters will start on Wednesday 9/10, to those in the municipality who are interested in participating in the "Compost from Home" programme.

The aim of this programme is the active participation of members of public in the sorting of organic waste and its alternative use, so as to reduce the amount of mixed waste in green bins, the management of seemingly "useless" products and their transformation into compost, which is a soil improver for every garden.

By participating in the programme, members of public are informed about managing and utilising their organic waste, reducing the ecological footprint on nature and improving our quality of life.

It should be noted that the process of procuring 1,800 composters began in May 2018, under the Municipal Authority of Kostas Nikolouzos. In May 2023, the first 110 composters were received and disturbed to schools and some individuals, by the Municipal Authority of Meropi Ydraiou.

How the distribution will be carried out

Members of public will have the opportunity to show their interest in obtaining a garden composter:

The composters are suitable for those who have a garden or field, due to their construction and placement in soil, so as to function properly.

The distribution and information sessions will take place every second Wednesday of each month at 13:00, at the Traffic Education Park or by appointment.

Composters will be distributed based on application priority, and there will be guidance provided on their proper use. A leaflet with detailed instructions for using the composters will be given upon delivery.

In areas outside Corfu Town, distribution and information sessions in villages will take place in collaboration with the council of each community, during evening hours.

The first areas where visits and information sessions will take place are:

  • Kastellani-Kinopiastes
  • Kalafiotes-Agios Prokopios
  • Benitses-Agioi Deka
  • Ano Garouna-Kato Garouna
  • Viros-Gastouri
  • Sinarades-Kouramades
  • Pelekas-Kokkini
