CORFU. Last minute ΄drop΄ in price has helped to increase the number of orders.
Sale of heating oil began slowly today with the price being set at €1.48 or €1.49 per litre.
The large companies readjusted their prices at the last minute before the official starting date for distribution (14/10) following the cuts made by the refineries, leading to a drop in price for the consumer.
Initial estimates
The initial estimates in Corfu had been that the price would be over €1.60. Nevertheless, although the price is lower than that - €1.48-1.49 - it is still more expensive than the larger urban centres (€1.38 per litre) because of transportation expenses, Corfu Petrol Dealers Association president Antonis Sakkos told Enimerosi.
Just a few days ago there was very little demand but, encouraged by the drop in price, consumers have now started ordering heating oil to ensure they can stay warm in the winter.
"Things changed once the lower prices were announced after the refineries had dropped their prices," said Mr. Sakkos. "Orders are increasing and the situation is much more satisfactory than it was a few days ago."
Small quantities being ordered
Nevertheless, the quantities of oil being ordered are low - mostly no more than 300 litres, with consumers not wanting to spend more than €600 on heating oil. "For €750 you can purchase 500 litres," Mr. Sakkos said. "Whereas previously for that amount of money you could fill your tank."
He said that most of the orders were from owners of detached houses and very few apartment blocks have ordered 1,000 litres.
The island's filling stations are in the process of receiving supplies of oil and it is expected that by the end of the week this will have been completed.
