CORFU. Heating oil is expected to be more expensive than last year despite the 25 cent per litre subsidy.
Heating oil is expected to be more expensive than last year despite the 25 cent per litre state subsidy. Consumers will need to spend much more money for their heating this year as, according to Corfu Petrol Dealers Association president Antonis Sakkos, it is expected that the price will be over €1.60 per litre, compared to €1.20-1.25 last year!
Although the official date from which heating oil can be sold is Friday 14 October, due to the fact that it is an island, it will begin on Monday 17th in Corfu.
Very few orders
At the moment there have been few orders and these have been for small quantities and those who still have oil from last year are waiting to see if prices will fall. With the general increase in the cost of living and low wages households are finding it almost impossible to cover any more expenses.
"It's not just heating oil, but the general cost of living," said Mr. Sakkas. "Consumers are being very careful. Those who are ordering are just ordering 100-300 litres and aren't filling their tanks as they did in the past."
Diesel prices rocketing
The significant increase in the price of diesel has had a knock-on effect on the price of heating oil. According to Mr. Sakkos, the price of diesel at Corfu filling stations is over €2.10 per litre - higher than the price of unleaded petrol.
Price increases can be observed on a daily basis. "The price increased by €0.50 from Friday to Saturday and again by another €0.30 from Monday to Tuesday," Mr. Sakkas said. He commented that the increase in diesel prices are disproportionately high compared to unleaded petrol and are on a steady upward trajectory. For the first time diesel is more expensive than unleaded petrol and costs over €2.10 per litre at Corfu filling stations.
Heating allowance
Heating oil will be cheaper for those eligible for heating allowances. The online platform 'myΘέρμανση' will be available by the beginning of November for people to submit applications - a ministerial statement is expected in the next few days regarding the criteria, eligibility and how the allowance will be given.
The heating allowance has increased to €350 this year compared to €300 last year and households that are using oil heating for the first time instead of electricity and gas will receive double the amount.
