Flooding in South Corfu again exactly one year after Balos storm

CORFU. Civil Protection Service, Fire Department and police all working to deal with problems caused by heavy downpour.
Memories of the Balos storm on 14 October last year were awoken in South Corfu.
One year after the storm that caused untold damage to houses and businesses as well as the island's road network, South Corfu woke up this morning to more flooding.

Early this morning heavy downpours caused flooding on the Messonghi-Moraitika road with vehicles unable to progress due to the high levels of water. Police had to close the road at the junction and divert traffic along other roads.
Lefkimmi Health Centre was flooded. Employees tried to clear the water with whatever means were available, such as towels and mops.
The South Corfu Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Mr. Kourtesis told ERA Kerkyra that the serious flooding happened at around 7-8am due to the heavy downpour and the water levels in some areas in Moraitika at the Lioumpa junction were as high as 20-30cm.
Some walls have also collapsed on the Boukari-Messonghi shore road and the road has been temporarily closed to traffic.
Mr. Kourtesis said that work is underway to reopen the road.
School yards have also been flooded at Lefkimmi Junior High and the 1st Melikio school and efforts are being made to clear them. He said that noone was in danger.
There were rushing torrents of water in Agios Gordios and the images being posted on social media reminded one of what happened in October 2021.

Stream overflowing in Linia, Argyrades
Although the local and regional authorities are saying that today's weather conditions can in no way be compared to the intensity of last year's Balos storm, nevertheless infrastructure has been hit once again before last year's damage has been completely repaired.
Even though the regional authority has cleaned up the stream beds, houses were yet again flooded with residents expressing their despair and frustration.
The Civil Protection Service, Fire Department and police are all working to deal with the problems along with the responsible Deputy Regional Governors and South Corfu Deputy Mayors with municipal vehicles and the Fire Department on standby to respond wherever needed.
