CORFU. The system has still not been linked with the Independent Public Revenue Authority (AADE) and the automatic ticket vendor.
The new automated parking system in Lower Square, Liston which has been adopted based on models in other European cities is still not operational.
Despite the optimistic prediction that it would be up and running by Christmas 2021, due to the usual pace at which things are done in the public services this was put back to Easter 2022. However, the system is still not fully operational.
The work on the automated parking system was completed by the Municipal Technical Works Department on 17 May, having delineated the new parking spaces, which according to law have to be larger than what they were previously, adding markings, crossings and setting up automatic barriers at the entrance and exit etc.
What is needed for completion
What is still needed from the Municipal Finance Department is for the system to be linked with the Independent Public Revenue Authority (AADE) and the automatic ticket vendor before the electronically-controlled parking system with time charges can become operational.
"We expect the tax mechanism to be set up any day now to link up with AADE," Deputy Mayor for Finance Giorgos Pantelis told Enimerosi. "Payments can be made in cash or by card, for which we will need extra POS equipment."
Licence
According to Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros, the car park in Lower Square is licensed and so can provide free access until the new electronically-controlled parking system becomes operational.
He told Enimerosi that the public will be informed about the new parking system so that parked cars can be removed.
Mr. Kalogeros asked drivers who use the car park not to use the spaces designated for those with special needs - something that is happening regularly.
