CORFU. Work progressing slowly – Green Spot expected to be ready by the end of 2022.

The creation and operation of the long-awaited Green Spot on Eptanisou St. near the Tria Gefiria junction is progressing very slowly.

It was expected to be ready by the end of the summer. However, the deadline is changing again, as the Deputy Mayor for Cleansing Yiannis Seremetis told Enimerosi that if everything goes well, the Green Spot will be ready by the end of 2022.

“Where should we take the rubbish?”

The small Green Spot on Eptanisou St., which would have all streams for sorting at source, could absorb a large amount of recyclable waste, both from the residents and the businesses.

According to Enimerosi readers living in the area, it would solve the problems of all those who consciously wish to do sorting at source but have to drive many miles to go to the nearest Green Spot outside the town.

Only voluntary Green Spots

So far, Central Corfu Municipality has Green Spots operating thanks to volunteers - and even these are outside the town. They exist solely thanks to the residents' efforts, even though the reduction of the number of rubbish by sorting at source was one of the Municipal Authority's pre-election promises.

However, the local government is also under great pressure due to the mandatory landfill tax that they are now obliged to pay for every ton of waste that ends up in a landfill, thus increasing the overall cost.

“Green” spot indeed

The Deputy Mayor for Cleansing say that responsible for the two-year delay, since the implementation project went ahead, is bureaucracy.

The study began in 2020 and today, having reached the end of August 2022, the small Green Spot has indeed become “green” from the weeds and reeds!

However, despite all the time that has passed, there has been no progress. The area where the green spot would be created is a small plot of land, about 500 sq. m., where the necessary equipment will be placed. The equipment will be purchased by the Ionian Islands Region, as it is funded by the European Interreg ‘Waste Rreact’ programme.

Dispute with the neighbour

“The Municipality acquired the land by expropriation. The neighbour appealed to the courts, but was not vindicated,” said Mr. Seremetis. “We have received all the required approvals and are ready to go ahead again. According to the agreement I had with the contractor, he will start work again on Monday. Hopefully the first small Green Spot of the Central Corfu Municipality will be ready by the end of the year.”
