CORFU. All the beaches supervised by Central Corfu Municipality which had applied passed the test and were awarded Blue Flags.

The beaches at Benitses, Ag. Ekaterini, Kanoni and Ermones now have Blue Flags - the other seven Blue Flag beaches announced in May are managed by hotels.

Central Corfu Deputy Mayor for Othoni and Planning Department Katechis supervised the preparation of the facilities and the submission of the file.

Mr. Katechis told Enimerosi that these beaches are not regarded as 'much-frequented' (beaches which have 300 or more people on at least one day) and so the presence of a lifeguard was not required. In any case it proved difficult to find lifeguards - "We advertised for lifeguards at least three times, to no avail!" he said.

If a beach is considered to be 'much-frequented' by the special committee, then the municipality is obliged to have a lifeguard tower every 400 metres.

Deputy Mayor Katechis saw the need to recruit lifeguards for the busy beaches before proceeding to place the towers - to avoid wasting money. He announced both to Enimerosi and in a press release that we would persist so that the Central Corfu Municipality could increase the number of Blue Flag beaches under its supervision.

The original announcement of Blue Flag beaches was made in May and the latest inspection was conducted on Tuesday 9 August, which rewarded the efforts that had been made.
