Checks to begin for tables and chairs outside catering establishments

CORFU. A meeting was held at the San Giacomo Old Town Hall to discuss the problems caused by the tables and chairs in catering establishments.
The problems caused by the placement - legal or not - of the tables and chairs in Central Corfu catering establishments were discussed at the meeting held this morning at the San Giacomo Old Town Hall.
Mayor Meropi Ydraiou was the one who called the meeting and it was attended by the responsible municipal councillor Spyros Moraitis, officials of the Municipality, Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities Director Tenia Rigakou and Fire Department, Police and EKAB representatives.
Tables, chairs, umbrellas and tents outside catering establishments were being checked by authorities and bodies in order to put things in order, to improve the daily life of residents and to make sure that access is not being blocked for ambulances and fire engines.
Mr. Moraitis told Enimrosi that checks are expected to start immediately from Corfu Town until Benitses and Paleokastritsa, in order to identify problems and wherever "violation are being made in the use of public areas, the catering establishment owners will be fined or the tables and chairs will be taken away."
"Checks will start being carried out in the near future, as was the case with the checks on music, and they are expected to be carried out by the Municipal Police. Every day we receive complaints from residents, whose access is being blocked. We should all be able to co-exist in our town. Both catering establishment owners and residents who need to have free access to move around should be able to live there," said Mr. Moraitis.
The bodies mentioned at the meeting all the problems caused by the tables, chairs, umbrellas and tents that take up a lot of space and in many cases block access to both residents and emergency vehicles.
Written notice
This of course will not happen suddenly, because as Mr. Moraitis explained, all the Associations will receive a written notice, in order for their members to be informed and take the necessary actions before the checks.
This meeting, however, is considered to be an important step towards improving the quality of life of the residents, provided that the planning for the checks is implemented.
