CORFU. Public transport ticket prices remain the same despite the huge fuel price increases that have already occurred.
The ticket prices in Corfu public transport remain the same for the time being without burdening those who use them, unlike the huge increases in fuel prices that are putting a significant burden on the companies. Although responsible for the increase in ticket prices is the responsible Ministry, the Corfu KTEL management said that it is not something they would want.
At 2011 levels
The KTEL Bus Company Director Alexandros Paggalis told Enimerosi that despite the huge increases in fuel prices, ticket prices have remained at 2011 levels for years and any price increase would be a last resort and it would not be something they would want. The price of a regular ticket is currently at €1.10-€1.50, while, if one buys it on the bus, its price can reach €1.70. However, there are discounts available that can reduce the cost of travel.
“We have kept the same prices despite the fuel price increases, absorbing the cost without increasing the ticket prices,” Mr. Paggalis said and added that the number of passengers has decreased by 40% due to the pandemic, as people avoided using public transport out of fear.
Still the same
“No increase has occurred in the ticket prices for routes outside Corfu”, said the President Tasos Tsiboulis. “It does not mean that every time there is an increase in fuel prices, ticket prices will also go up,” he told Enimerosi. He added, however, that due to weather conditions and the high prices in general, the number of passengers has decreased by 50% compared to last year! The ticket from Corfu to Thessaloniki is €34.30, to Athens €44.50 and to Larissa €27.80, while for 5 tickets to areas outside Corfu, 1 is free, provided that they are all in the same name. At the same time, a 10% discount is offered on return tickets.
Ferries
And while the ferry tickets from Piraeus and Rafina to the Argosaronic Islands and the Cyclades have already started to increase, nothing similar has happened on the Corfu-Igoumenitsa service for the time being.
Today, the ferry ticket prices for this route are €10-€10,60 for passengers and €40-€41,30 for cars depending on the company. However, permanent residents of Corfu have a 50% discount, which is available either by showing a receipt at the ticket offices or by booking the tickets online.
Airline tickets
Finally, the Pressident of AOCTA (Association of Corfu Travel Agents) Spyros Halikiopoulos told Enimerosi that the airline ticket prices also remain the same for now. He said, however, that he believes that this will change and there will necessarily be increases in the future. “Low-cost companies will face the biggest challenge. We are also waiting for an update,” he clarified.
