CORFU. Consumption has fallen by 40% due to the huge price increase in heating oil, diesel oil and petrol.

It is becoming even harder for both households and businesses to afford the necessary fuels.

As Corfu petrol dealers told Enimerosi, there are now increases in all products daily, while the decrease in consumption reaches 40%, since the majority cannot afford it. The price of heating oil has increased since last October, when it became available in Corfu. It has now reached €1.36, when in October it was €1.20-1.25 per litre.

As professionals point out, demand has been significantly reduced, while people are ordering just a few litres – just enough to cover their needs without wasting anything. “People are finding it difficult to buy petrol and the orders we are receiving are for small quantities. This is the first time this is happening in the market, as the huge increases in electricity bills and other products are acting as a deterrent. The situation is even worse on the islands, where there are increased costs because of transport costs.

It is commonly known that there will be price increases today and tomorrow,” petrol dealer Kostas Arvanitakis told Enimerosi. It is worth noting that the heating oil will be available, as always, until April 30 and then again on October 15.

€1.94 for unleaded petrol

Meanwhile, unleaded petrol at filling stations in Corfu is very close to €2 per litre. It is now available at €1.94 per litre, as the price has gradually increased. For example, last October its price was at €1.79 per liter, in January it reached €1.83 per liter and today it is €1.94 per liter, meaning that it has increased by 0.15 cents compared to October 2021.

People are filling their car tanks with only €10-20, while consumption is constantly decreasing. “Consumption has fallen by 40% and most people waste only a few euros to move their vehicles,” petrol dealer Ioannis Mavilis told Enimerosi, stressing that the fuel now sold on the market comes from supplies from previous months and any negative impact on fuel prices, due to the war in Ukraine, will be seen in the coming months.

Finally, as far as diesel is concerned, the price is now €1,64 per litre, when last October it was €1,50. It is worth noting that an amendment is ready and will be submitted to the Parliament to impose a cap on fuel, as the Minister for Development Adonis Georgiades announced.
