ATHENS. “The local community and its needs are not being taken into account at all by the government,” said Corfu SYRIZA MP Alexandros Avlonitis.
According to Corfu SYRIZA MP Alexandros Avlonitis, the Bank’s General Director told him that the economic activity in the area makes it impossible for the Bank to maintain a branch, and argues that the residents can access banking services through ATMs and digital banking tools.

“The suspension of the operation of the Alpha Bank branch in Acharavi after 30 years proves that the local community and its needs are not being taken into account at all by the government, which should have already intervened, instead of just sitting back and doing nothing about these plans that clearly go against the community, taking it by surprise and disrupting economic activity.
And, to put it plainly, the Bank would not lose anything if it continued to operate its branch with two employees, since all the systemic banks have received generous financial support, provided by the state with Greek citizens' money, through recapitalisations.
The dissatisfaction of the local community is the response to the choices of the government, which prioritises private interests instead of public ones,” said Corfu SYRIZA MP Alexandros Avlonitis.
