CORFU. Corfu Labour Centre President Stamatis Pelais called for an extension of the deadline for submitting applications for the Corfu School of Tourism retraining programmes.
Negotiations between the Hotel Employees and Catering - Tourism Workers Union and the Business Association and the Corcyra Beach Hotel management have paid off, in order to secure the hotel’s 150 employees from the new tourist season.
As the Corfu Labour Centre President Stamatis Pelais said in a press conference, an agreement was signed with the business, which provides that if the hotel does not start operating by May 2, due to renovation work, the employees hired will be paid and insured on full-time terms based on the sectoral collective agreement for the period May 2 - October 31.
“It is the result of the workers’ struggles and it basically secures their right to work for the next year. It is an example of how the working class, by fighting continuously and consistently, can bring about such results,” he said. At the same time, Mr. Pelais called on all workers to apply for re-employment through the sector's Unions where it is applicable (hotels, accommodation, tourist bus drivers).
Retraining programmes
Regarding the submission of applications for the Corfu School of Tourism retraining programmes, Mr. Pelais called for an extension of the deadline for submitting applications at least until the end of the year. “By December 23, when the deadlines for submission of applications end, we fear that not all those interested will have been informed and they will not have collected all the necessary documents,” he said. He also added that, due to the understaffing of the School of Tourism, which is resulting in an uncertain future, they are calling for the recruitment of the necessary administrative and teaching staff for its proper operation.
