CORFU. The number of hotel employees who have not received unemployment benefit is constantly decreasing.

Corfu Hotel Employees’ Union’s call to seasonal workers regarding their applications for re-employment in hotels for the new tourist season received a positive response.

Out of a total of 5,500 people who were eligible, 1,800 submitted applications, with which they basically secure their right to mandatory re-employment and receipt of special purpose allowance in case of suspensions.

The Corfu Labour Centre President Stamatis Pelais told Enimerosi that the final number of people who applied for their re-employment through the Labour Centre is very satisfactory. It should be noted that, in order for an employee to be re-employed, a written notice to their employer is necessary, telling them that they wish to be employed in the coming period. This written notice must be given through the Labour Centre and must be sent to the employer by 30 January. “The employer is obliged to re-employ them. Otherwise, they will have to cancel the contract and pay compensation. If the employee fails to do so, the latter will have to receive the wages for the period they had been suspended,” said Mr. Pelais.

Earlier

The deadline for re-employing hotel employees is May 25. However, it seems that this year's tourist season will start earlier, even before Easter, as this tourist season is expected to be very good – barring unforeseen circumstances due to the pandemic. “At the moment, everyone is calling their staff or trying to renew them. Although there is a tendency to hire less staff, which we will not allow to happen,” Pelais pointed out.

Still waiting

Meanwhile, there are some hotel employees who have remained unpaid for months – since their insurance stamps do not appear on EFKA – and are still waiting to receive the unemployment benefit. According to Mr. Pelais, the number of those facing problems is constantly decreasing, while the situation had gradually started to become normal since November.

On Friday 11 February, OAED payments are expected to be made. However, if someone does not see money in their account, they may contact the Labour Centre.

“Insurance stamps appear almost every day now and OAED is paying the unemployment benefits. However, the stamps for May - June should have appeared two months later and not in November,” said Mr. Pelais. He also added that those eligible for the unemployment benefit in Corfu used to be 4,000, but this number has now decreased.
