North Corfu Mayor: Projects to solve North Corfu’s water supply problem

CORFU. Decisions that will contribute to solve the long-standing problems of water shortage, water supply cuts and the protection of public health and the environment.
North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris’ statement:
The North Corfu Municipal Authority collaborated with the government on water supply and sewerage issues and other small projects within the Municipality, headed by the Deputy Mayor for Everyday Issues Nikos Mouzakitis and the councillor and co-partner Vasilis Salvanos, along with the Corfu Intermunicipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company – in particular Vasilis Argyros, General Director of Corfu DEYAK Mr. Haralambakis and the Head of DEYAK Tasos Katsaros. The result of the collaboration was the important decisions taken by the Corfu Intermunicipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company Board (DIADEYADK) at the meeting that was held on Tuesday 30 November 2021, which basically adopt the North Corfu Municipal Authority’s proposals.
These are decisions that will significantly help local communities and will contribute to solve the long-standing problems of water shortage, water supply cuts and the protection of public health and the environment.
In particular, the most important decisions taken are:
1. “Approval of the study and tender terms for the project ‘Exploratory drillings as part of the implementation of North Corfu hydrogeological study’, which has been included in the ‘Antonis Tritsis’ programme”. The project concerns 11 exploratory drillings in Northwest and Northeast Corfu, with a total estimated value of €484,484 (VAT excluded).
2. “Approval of the study and tender terms for the project ‘Replacement of South Corfu Local Water Supply Networks’ which has been included in the ‘Antonis Tritsis’ programme”.
This is a very important project for our region, since it concerns – after many years – the replacement of the existing old local water supply network of 14,970 meters. The project budget amounts to €580,054.
It is worth noting that for the two abovementioned projects the amount of €1,064,538 was given by the North Corfu Municipality to DIADEYADK – and are part of the €12,000,000 entitled to the North Corfu Municipality in the ‘Antonis Tritsis’ programme.
3. “Final approval of the study and tender terms for the project ‘Replacement of the main water pipe in Zygos-Nissaki’” following the approval of the tender by the Ionian Islands Region Special Management Service, with a budget of €510,951.
The North Corfu Municipal Authority continues its efforts for water sufficiency and safe consumption by households.
At the same time – in addition to the existing collaboration – continues to fight for the establishment of an autonomous DEYA (Public Water Company) for the North Corfu Municipality, which will improve the provision of services and solve this crucial issue in the everyday lives of North Corfu residents and the quality of life.
Finally, we are asking citizens to contribute to DIADEYADK's basic operation by paying part of their obligations.
