The International Hellenic Association (a non-profit, non-governmental, non-partisan organisation based in Delaware, US), has, for some years now, among many other projects, started a programme to support and repopulate small Aegean and Ionian islands.

In the framework of this programme’s activities, the International Hellenic Association (IHA) is collaborating with many different organisations of the Greek Diaspora and many others.

The Austrian “Association for Humanitarian Aid in Greece” (Griechenlandhilfe) is one of the collaborating organisations taking part in the twenty different IHA projects.

The ‘Griechenlandhilfe’ Association, which shows particular interest for the Small Remote Islands aid programme, has undertaken an excellent initiative to improve the health care and education services of three remote islands in Northwest Corfu – Othoni, Mathraki and Erikoussa.

The donation included two electrocardiographs, a mobile surgical light, a Covid-19 Rapid Test pulse oximeter, bandages, medical equipment, books, various school supplies, as well as toys for the young students in Mathraki and Erikoussa.

The donation was handed over during a special ceremony by the ‘Griechenlandhilfe’ founder Erwin Schrümpf to the Corfu and the Dipontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou on Saturday 30 October 2021. The Deputy Mayors of the three small islands, as well as the Central Corfu Municipal Council President Dimitris Metallinos were also present at the ceremony, which took place in Corfu.

Erwin Schrümpf, the founder of ‘Griechenlandhilfe’ (‘Help for Greece’) based in Salzburg, said that “it is particularly important for us to support people in remote places, where they have many and great basic needs”.

It is worth noting that the transport of the items of this donation is the 105th in a row that Erwin Schrümpf has personally carried out in the last nine years. More than 500 resupply missions have taken place in total and more than 1,600 tons of humanitarian supplies have been delivered.

The International Hellenic Association Board and ‘Committee of Small Remote Islands’ would like to thank Mr. Erwin Schrümpf and is hoping that he will soon plan similar donations to the small Aegean islands.
