CORFU. Enthusiastic participation in the Scouts΄ online loukoumades sharing challenge.
This year Corfiots were deprived of the island's tradition of preparing and sharing loukoumades on the eve of St. Spyridon's Feast Day due to the pandemic. Undeterred, the Corfu scouts, ingenious as ever, decided to issue a challenge to all their friends - to make loukoumades at home and post the photos on social media. The target? 10,000 loukoumades!
They were more than happy with the result and the Regional Scout Leader Kostas Karabatsos said:
"Last night, on the eve of St. Spyridon's Feast Day, we successfully completed the Loukoumades Challenge 2020. When we set a target of 10,000 loukoumades - or 'tiganites' as they are traditionally called in Corfu - it seemed unfeasible. But now it seems very simple to us!
Together we can make that which seems impossible simple! What really made us happy this year was that Corfiots and others came together from lots of countriesand towns, whether or not they were scouts!
We had photos from London, Helsinki, Dublin, Cyprus, Athens, Crete, Olympos, Drama, Ioannina and Derviziana. It was incredible! Well done to everyone - we would like to give heartfelt thanks to everyone for their efforts.
Thank you for helping us keep the tradition alive. A custom that goes back to the island's Venetian period and a scouts' tradition for the last 100 years. Our thanks go to everyone - from the Cubs to the former scouts and the Social Welfare Committee which plays a major part in this celebration every year.
Our thanks to all those who were covered in flour and suffered small burns from the oil in order to make the loukoumades, share their smiles with everyone and post their photos and videos so that we could reach our target.
In truth, we lost count and don't know if we reached 10,000 loukoumades but we were able to count the big smiles, the love, joy and optimism!
The Corfu Scouts wish everyone good health, strength and happiness for them and their families.
Best wishes to all Corfu!
May our Saint always protect us!"
