CORFU. World Bicycle Day in Corfu.
The Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality is organising special events on the occasion of World Bicycle Day along with cyclists, cycling clubs and the Ionian Islands & Western Greece Union of Tourist Guides.
The Municipality is making available 20 bicycles which anyone who wishes can borrow to enjoy a cycle ride (ID card required).
The events, which will have the support of the Traffic Police and the Municipal Traffic Department, are designed to encouraged the use of bikes as a means of sustainable movement and to develop a cycling culture!
Programme
10:00 - 13:30
Starting and finishing at the Old Town Hall, cyclists young and old will have the opportunity to enjoy a ride around the historical centre, the main square and Garitsa coast road - helping to convey a positive message for an improvement in the quality of life in town.
20 bikes will be made available by the Municipality.
18:00 - 21:00
Starting and finishing at the Old Town Hall, the evening ride will pass through the Main Square and along Garitsa shore road to Mon Repos, where participants can enjoy a special cultural experience with a tour of this wonderful spot led by professional guides.
The Deputy Mayor for Culture & Sport Chrysoula Tombrou made the following statement:
"The Central Corfu Municipality considers it important to adopt a programme of sustainable urban movement promoting a cycling culture.
To this end, the Municipal Department of Culture & Sport is drawing up a comprehensive plan including the following:
- Mapping out and creating a cycling route on Vidos Island.
- Establishment of a 'Cycling Day' with the town centre being available only for bikes on that day.
- Cooperation with other Greek Municipalities to establish a National Network of cycling-friendly towns.
- Joining EuroVelo (European Cycle Route Network), which is managed by the European Cyclists’ Federation and whose objective is to ensure the implementation of very high quality cycle routes focussing on culture, heritage and nature.
I would like to invite you all to take part in this important event - cycling clubs, communities and groups - so that we can encourage the use of bikes as a means of transport and promote sustainable movement in our local community."
