10 Blue Flag beaches in Corfu for 2020

CORFU. The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (EEPF), the national operator of the international Blue Flag Programme, has announced this year΄s Blue Flag awards in Greece for beaches, marinas and sustainable tourism boats.
The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (EEPF), which is the the national operator of the international Blue Flag Programme, has announced this year's Blue Flag awards in Greece for beaches, marinas and sustainable tourism boats.
Greece occupies second place amongst the 47 participating countries with 497 award-winning beaches, 14 marinas and 6 sustainable tourist boats. This year Greece has 13% of worldwide award-winning beaches.
Blue Flags 2020
The International Committee gave the award this year to 3,895 beaches, 691 marinas and 82 sustainable tourist boats.
The top region in Greece is once again Halkidiki with 94 Blue Flags.
In the fourth decade of the country's participation in the Blue Flag Programme, Greek beaches will once again fly Blue Flags, which are awarded to beaches for the excellent quality of the bathing water, the high level of services offered to bathers and which meet the cleanliness and hygiene criteria for the protection of public health.
Criteria for Blue Flag awards
The Blue Flag programme has been in operation since 1987 and In order to qualify for this prestigious award, a series of stringent criteria must be met and maintained. For a beach to be awarded a Blue Flag - which lasts for a year - the bathing water must be 'Excellent'.
In addition to this all the remaining criteria out of a total of 33 must be met (38 for marinas and 51 for tourist boats). These criteria refer to cleanliness, organisation, information, bathers' and visitors' safety, protection of the natural resources of the beach and coastal area and environmental awareness.
In 2017 the Award Programme for sustainable tourist boats was implemented for the first time in Greece. The Programme presents awards to tourist boat companies for the sustainable operation their vessels based on 51 criteria for general companies and extra criteria for specific categories such as diving vessels.
Haris Theoharis: The awards have special significance this year
The Greek Minister of Tourism Haris Theoharis said that this year, more than any other year, the Blue Flags have special significance for Greek tourism.
"Each Blue Flag doesn't only indicate that the beach, marina or tourist boat offers comprehensive, high-quality services. This year the Blue Flags also symbolise our desire to return to normality," he said.
There are 10 Blue Flag beaches in Corfu this year.
