Human trafficking ring going through Corfu broken up
illegal immigrants

LECCE (ITALY). Corfu was the intermediate stop for the trafficking of people between Turkey and Italy. With the oversight of Europol, Italian and Greek authorities uncovered an international ring taking immigrants from Greece to Italy.
According to the Italian authorities, the ring had two bases - one in Italy run by an Italian from Brindisi and the other in Greece run by a Syrian.
According to an article in zougla.gr by Christos Mazanis, immigrants arrived in Turkey and from there went on to Greece where members of the ring hid them in Athens until the next trip to their final destination in Italy.
Most of them were taken to Corfu, where they waited once again. Fast boats constructed in Salento then took them to the Italian coast at Lecce.
In Italy these arrivals were called 'ghost landings' and Lecce prosecutors were able, through continuous efforts, to get to the bottom of the illegal activity and uncover those responsible.
The movements of the illegal immigrants were constantly monitored by the Italian Guardia di Finanza with the support of the Coastguard in Corfu as well as aircraft and sea vessels from the Guardia di Finanza Air Operations Service in Bari. Frontex aircraft also took part in the operation.
