Corfu Half Marathon volunteers presented with awards

CORFU. Yiannis Lessis, President of the Corfu branch of the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS), said that the volunteers were the stars of the 2nd Corfu Half Marathon.
On Sunday evening at Faliraki awards were presented to volunteers for their contribution to the Half Marathon.
The event's Technical Advisor Evaggelos Papastolos congratulated the 1,500 runners who took part in the race, including 1,000 school pupils. He thanked the Corfiot & Diapontian Municipality for its support and the main event sponsor Eurobank. The 2nd Corfu Half Marathon took place under the auspices of Corfu Olympic Medal-winners, GNTO, Corfu Hoteliers' Association, Urban & Rural Buses, Corfu Port Authority and the Association of Corfu Travel Agents. Mr. Papastolos also said that he agreed that next year's Half Marathon will attract twice the number of runners - especially from abroad.
The President of the Municipal Cultural, Sport and Environmental Organisation (DOPAP) Nikos Korakianitis said that, despite the difficulties, they decided along with SEGAS to go ahead with the 2nd Corfu Half Marathon and volunteers played a significant role in the success of the event.
The President of the local SEGAS branch Yiannis Lessis talked about the participation of people with special needs and its symbolic importance. He went on to say that he had previously believed that the runners were the stars of the event but now realised that the real stars were the volunteers.
The Municipal Councillor for Voluntary Work Spyros Neratzis said that the Half Marathon was able to get across the message of recycling. All the volunteers took part in the collection of recyclable materials and only one small bag of waste was sent to Temploni landfill. Mr. Neratzis praised the successful organisation of the event and joked that the estimate of double the numbers next year was very low!
