ATHENS. "The manipulative scheming of the local authority led to the island being filled with refuse," says the Executive Committee of the National Federation of Local Authority Employees (POE-OTA)
Federation statement
Yet again the Municipality of Corfu has chosen to 'drown' the island in rubbish. The attempt to assign the collection of refuse to private contractors for the huge sum of 2m Euros in 2019 which Corfu Local Authority is seeking the approval of the Town Council is just a continuation of what is has been doing for a long time - to manipulate the situation to the detriment of the workers and local residents.
The Local Authority degraded the Cleansing Service and filled the island with rubbish, it made no effort to reorganize and invest in the service and didn't repair and maintain the fleet of vehicles. Now, just a few months before the local elections it is serving the interests of the large private contractors by awarding them the refuse collection contract.
POE-OTA states categorically that it is going to continue supporting the public and social interest in the local authority and services and will not allow the awarding of cleansing contracts to private contractors.
Corfu Municipal Cleansing Services has 300 employees and there is no excuse that there is a lack of personnel to collect refuse.
The Local Authority's insistence on privatising the Cleansing Services in Corfu after all that the island has been through just highlights its intention to serve specific private interests.
POE-OTA stands with the Corfu Municipal workers to prevent the undermining of the public and social nature of the Local Authority which is to the detriment of the workers and the public.
