CORFU. An initiative from the Soroptimists for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
San Giacomo, the Old Town Hall, will be lit up in orange this Sunday! The initiative comes from Corfu Soroptimists in collaboration with the Municipal Gender Equality Committee on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November.
Orange is considered to be a colour that represents a future free of abuse and violence against women and girls. The Soroptimists and the Municipality, with this symbolic gesture, hope to raise public awareness of the issue.
"Violence against women, whatever form it takes," says the statement from the Soroptimists and the Municipality, "continues to be a widespread violation of human rights throughout the world. It is the crime glossed over the most in the world. It isn't connected with any specific culture, country or women's group."
