Corfu General Hospital Board Meet with Ministers of Health

ATHENS. On Tuesday 4 October the President of the Corfu General Hospital Board, Phoevos Kakavitsas, along with all the board members

met for 3 hours with the 2 Ministers of Health. Also present at the meeting were the two local SYRIZA MPs Ms Vakis and Mr Pavlidis, as well as the ANEL MP responsible for Health Dr Christopoulos.
All the problems of the hospital were put on the table, with priorities being finance and staffing. The hospital gave a detailed analysis of the current situation and commitments were made to find solutions for key issues within the framework of the ministry’s upcoming programme.

The specific commitments made were:
·         Processing the payments due to Public Utility companies from previous years.
·         Speeding up the recruitment of 2 kidney specialists for the Artificial Kidney Unit with the first of these to be completed within the next 1½ months.
·         Of the next 2 airlift basesto be created, one will be located at Aktiou to cover the Ionian Islands.
·         The Paediatric Department will become Paediatric-Neonatal and the administration will be able to hire neonatologists.
It was made clear with the presentation of numbers how stretched the nursing staff is and the Ministry confirmed that their aim is to keep the staff that was recruited through the Employment Office for another year.

It was also announced that in the immediate future the paramedical staff that are still required would be recruited through the Employment Office and that 7 of these new recruits would come to Corfu Hospital. Although there will be a delay before the ministry announces new permanent nursing jobs, there was discussion about how the immediate need for non-medical staff could be covered. The ministry also declared its intention to make the method of recruiting auxiliary non-medical staff similar to the recruitment of auxiliary medical staff in order to cover immediate needs.
A commitment was made to enhance the hospital’s Emergency Department with the immediate recruitment of permanent medical personnel and the specific targetting of permanent medical staff in the next hospital recruitment notices.

The President of the Hospital Board, Phoevos Kakavitsas, declared that from their side they felt that they had achieved their first aim – bringing the problems that the hospital faces to the attention of the ministry, as well as the demand for staff allocation amongst hospitals on a proportional basis and taking into account the island status of the Corfu General Hospital. He also stated that they were satisfied with the initiation of specific solutions.
Mr Kakavitsas went on to say that the fight for the further development of health services at the hospital didn’t stop here and that they would continue their daily effort to improve the situation in cooperation with the Ministry of Health despite the limitations of the present economic situation.
