On Monday, April 27, from 17:00 to 21:00, a concert by the Traditional Instruments Orchestra of Nanjing University, China, will be held at the Ionian Academy.
The Traditional Instruments Orchestra of Nanjing University was founded in 1996 and is composed of undergraduate and postgraduate students from various schools and departments of this leading university in China. As a non-professional artistic ensemble, the Orchestra has received distinctions such as the Top Award for National Cultural Creation in Universities, first prizes in National Student Instrumental Arts Competitions, and many other awards, thanks to its dedicated and talented conductors and musicians. The Orchestra primarily performs traditional Chinese instrumental music in formats including ensemble, homophonic, small ensemble, and solo performances featuring bowed and plucked strings, woodwind, and percussion instruments.
Through its ensemble performances and high artistic standards, the Orchestra has been widely embraced and appreciated by faculty, students, and the local community, and has also gained friends internationally. Since its establishment, the Orchestra has given more than 500 performances, with a repertoire of approximately one thousand pieces of traditional Chinese music.
Over the past two decades, the Orchestra has been invited to perform in Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Egypt, France, Germany, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Malaysia, Norway, Peru, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and other countries and regions, contributing to its international reputation.
The Orchestra is characterised by the grace and beauty of the local music of the scenic and culturally vibrant Yangtze River Delta region, home to Nanjing University. Through diligent training, the Orchestra has developed a refreshing, vibrant, and innovative style and has built an outstanding repertoire.
The recording of the Orchestra’s performance, entitled “Melodies on Campus – Album of the Traditional Instruments Orchestra of Nanjing University,” has received widespread acclaim and particularly positive feedback from professional musicians.
