Shared Breath: Contemporary musical and narrative performance at Old Fortress

On Sunday 26 and Monday 27 July at 9:00 p.m., the work Shared Breath will be performed at Corfu Old Fortress. This contemporary musical and narrative composition for ten brass instruments, percussion, and narrator features original music by Orestis Papaioannou. Among the performers is Skripero-born trombonist Christos Giakas of the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, who took his first musical steps with the Skripero Philharmonic Society.

At its heart is the concept of breath as the common denominator of the human experience—life, speech, memory, and togetherness.

Through a series of interconnected sections, the performance creates a dialogue between contemporary artistic expression and cultural heritage, incorporating subtle references to the classical repertoire. The narrator serves as the connecting thread, weaving a poetic flow of words that brings the music to life as an act of shared presence.

Designed specifically for archaeological sites, the performance makes use of the natural acoustics and symbolic power of its setting, offering audiences a ritual-like listening experience.

Shared Breath highlights the need to redefine what it means to be human through coexistence and a shared rhythm.
