Proposed location of substation sparks debate
CORFU. The presence of a section of the town’s water system in Spianada is undisputed.
The siting of the DEDDIE substation in Spianada remains in the spotlight, particularly due to the possibility that it may coincide with the route of an old aqueduct dating back to the British period, during the tenure of High Commissioner Frederick Adam.
The exact routing of such infrastructure has not been fully disclosed, making careful investigation imperative before any intervention.
The term “aqueduct” does not refer to a single tank or cistern, but to a broader water supply system, including underground pipes, tunnels, and individual reservoirs. The key issue today is not terminology, but the underground alignment and the actual extent of these structures, whose existence at the site is not in dispute.
At this point, a reasonable question arises: what became of the investigation that, according to reports, was carried out during the mayoralty of Christos Sarlis, in connection with the then-planned underground parking facility? If a subsurface survey was indeed conducted by a commissioned engineer, the relevant material should not remain outside public discussion.
