CORFU. Groundwater in the area triggered a landslide, leading to the subsidence of part of the road.

(Ionian Islands Regional Authority) Significant technical interventions by the Ionian Islands Regional Authority are currently underway aiming to repair damage to the road network and strengthen road safety at locations where increased needs have been identified.

In the area of Gastouri, on the road connecting Achilleio with Benitses, at the location known as “Montaniola,” work has begun to restore the major subsidence that occurred following the recent severe weather events.

Groundwater in the area triggered a landslide, leading to the subsidence of part of the road.

To address the problem, the Regional Authority is implementing a geotechnical retaining project using the reinforced earth method, with foundations on stable subsoil, in order to ensure the stability of the road and the safe passage of vehicles.

The works are being carried out over a length of approximately 50 metres, and according to the schedule the road is expected to reopen to traffic within the next 20 to 25 days.

At the same time, the Regional Authority is proceeding with another important project aimed at improving road safety conditions on the island.

Works have begun in the Gefyra Yiatron – Troumpeta area for the installation of modern LED lighting fixtures with a photovoltaic system, which will illuminate sections of the National Road Network that currently lack adequate street lighting.

This project is part of the broader plan of the Regional Authority to upgrade Corfu’s road network. It includes the installation of similar lighting fixtures along a total length of approximately 50 kilometres of the National Road Network within the Regional Unit of Corfu, improving visibility and driver safety, particularly during nighttime hours.

The Deputy Regional Governor for Technical Works and Planning of the Region of the Ionian Islands, Giorgos Mamalos, attended both projects and was briefed on site about the progress of the works and the planning of the next technical interventions.
