Watch for symptoms of gastroenteritis following recent harsh weather
CORFU. Guidelines from the Ionian Islands General Directorate of Public Health & Social Welfare for preventing and addressing a possible increase in gastroenteritis cases.
(Ionian Islands Regional Authority) Due to the extreme weather conditions that affected Corfu, particularly areas of the Municipality of North Corfu, the Ionian Islands General Directorate of Public Health & Social Welfare has issued the following guidelines from the Hellenic National Public Health Organisation (EODY) for the prevention and immediate management of a potential increase in gastroenteritis cases.
EODY Recommendations for Preventing Foodborne Illnesses in Case of Crowding of Flood-Affected People in Hosting Facilities:
Keep cooked and raw foods separate
-
Store cooked foods separately.
-
Keep raw foods (e.g., meat, poultry, seafood) in separate containers from cooked foods.
-
Use different utensils (e.g., knives, cutting boards) for raw and cooked foods.
Transport and store foods safely
-
During transport, food should not be exposed directly to sunlight.
-
Ensure correct temperatures are maintained inside vehicles.
-
Protect food and kitchen areas from insects, pets, and other animals.
Ensure proper cooking of foods
-
Cook food thoroughly, especially meat, poultry, eggs, and seafood. For meat and poultry, make sure the juices are clear, not pink.
-
Reheat cooked food carefully before serving. Keep food at safe temperatures. Minimise the time between cooking and consumption.
-
Do not leave cooked food at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Refrigerate any cooked or heat-sensitive food promptly (below 5°C). Recommended freezer temperature is 0°C.
-
Keep cooked food warm until consumption. Leftover food should be eaten within 24 hours, while fresh fruits and vegetables should be consumed within 3 days. Do not thaw frozen food at room temperature; thawed foods should be cooked within one hour.
Consume safe water
-
If informed that the water at the hosting site is unsafe to drink:
-
Use bottled water. Alternatively, boil water before drinking (3 minutes).
-
Do not leave bottled water exposed to sunlight. Store it in the refrigerator or in a cool, dark place.
-
Follow hygiene rules
-
Wash hands before handling food and after using the toilet.
-
Clean and disinfect thoroughly all surfaces and equipment used in food preparation.
