CORFU. The children came into direct contact with the natural world, developed observation and inquiry skills, and experienced the joy of teamwork and creative expression.

On Friday, November 7, pupils from Corfu “Athenagoreio” 4th Experimental Primary School participated in the 8th Mushroom Festival, which took place in Agia Varvara, Porta Sinion, experiencing a unique opportunity to connect with nature, knowledge, and artistic creation.

The event was successfully organised by Sinies Cultural Society in collaboration with the Corfu and Greece Mushroom Lovers’ Association, aiming to bring children closer to the natural wealth of our region and to raise their awareness of environmental and cultural heritage issues.

The day’s rich programme began with the presentation “The Caretta–Caretta Turtle on Our Beaches,” through which the children learned about the life and the threats faced by this emblematic species, as well as the need to protect the marine ecosystem.

A clay workshop followed, in collaboration with the “reon” studio, where the pupils created original works inspired by mushrooms and nature. With their hands, imagination, and natural materials, the children captured the magic of the forest’s microcosm, expressing their impressions creatively.

The most experiential moment of the day was the excursion into the forest, accompanied by experienced mycologists and volunteers. There, the pupils had the opportunity to closely observe the local flora, discover various types of mushrooms, and learn how to identify edible and toxic species. The experts explained to the children the importance of mushrooms for the ecosystem, their role in maintaining nature’s balance, and their connection to our cultural tradition. Throughout the event, the Sinies Societyy ensured excellent organisation, offering the children snacks, juices, and water, while medical staff were also present to ensure everyone’s safety.

This experience served as a vivid lesson in environmental education, cooperation, and respect for nature. The children came into direct contact with the natural world, developed observation and inquiry skills, and experienced the joy of teamwork and creative expression.

Corfu “Athenagoreio” 4th Experimental Primary School expresses its warmest thanks to Sinies Cultural Society, the Corfu and Greece Mushroom Lovers’ Association, the “reon” studio, the expert mycologists, the volunteers, and everyone who contributed to the success of this wonderful initiative.

Participation in such initiatives strengthens the school’s connection with the local community, fosters respect and love for the environment in children, and gives meaning to the phrase that true learning is born through experience.
