Problem with waste collection due to illegal disposal of residue

The Regional Public Health Service has instructed Central Corfu Municipality to carry out urgent and extensive rodent control in the wider Alepou area. Authorities warn that the situation remains dangerous, ten days after the devastating fire, as site clearing and waste removal continued at least until the morning of Monday, October 27.

The case took a new turn when a team of environmental inspectors from Thessaloniki travelled to Filippiada and, according to journalistic sources, discovered that part of the residue transported to the area had been buried, while another part was left exposed in the open air!

Although a complaint had been filed as early as Friday, inspectors were unable to carry out an on-site investigation that day or over the weekend. The inspection finally took place on Monday morning, confirming the above violations.

Authorities have since immobilised the trucks involved, and a case file is being prepared for breaches of environmental legislation.

As of now, no official statement has been issued by the competent services regarding the incident.
