Goggakis

CORFU. The purpose is to address the problem that has arisen with the accumulated spoiled foodstuffs following the devastating fire at Goggakis.

Under the chairmanship of the Secretary General for Waste Management, Mr. M. Grafakos, a meeting of the relevant stakeholders has been called for today, Tuesday, October 21, at the Ministry of Environment, regarding the disposal of the spoiled foodstuffs.

According to reports, the proposal provides for a specialised company to undertake the task of transporting the materials to a certified facility outside the island. The debris — such as metal sheets and similar debris — will be moved first, followed by any remaining organic matter.

Officials commented that the hazardous material is estimated to be significantly less than the initially reported 1,500 tons, as a large portion has already been reduced to ash.

After the meeting, announcements will be made, along with instructions for nearby residents and those approaching or passing through the area.
