Educational environmental field project with pupils at Roda Beach

CORFU. In total, more than 100 children participated in a threefold, hands-on activity, experiencing firsthand the value of participation, personal responsibility and active citizenship.
(Spyridoula Kokkali) The Municipality of North Corfu, as part of its initiatives to promote the circular economy, environmental awareness, and public cleanliness, carried out a meaningful educational field activity today on Roda seafront, with the participation of two local schools:

2nd Thinalia School Centre (Platonas, Nymfes)

2nd Velonades Special Primary School
The project was carried out in collaboration with the Principal of Platonas Primary School, Spyridoula Kourkoulou, and the Principal of Velonades 2nd Special School, Christos Kisiotis.
In total, more than 100 children took part in a threefold, hands-on activity, experiencing firsthand the value of participation, personal responsibility, and active citizenship.
1st Activity – Symbolic Beach Clean-Up
A beach clean-up was conducted by the children, their teachers, the Deputy Mayor of Circular Economy, Environment, and Public Relations, Spyridoula Kokkali, and a team from the Municipality’s Civil Protection Service, led by the Deputy Head of Civil Protection, Giorgos Mavropoulos. The children also created artistic banners and slogans on the theme of environmental protection, showcasing their imagination and creativity, as well as their personal perspective on environmental responsibility.
2nd Activity – Demonstration of Municipal Cleaning Equipment
Pupils observed in real time and on-site the operation of three key municipal cleaning machines:

Street Sweeper: Cleans large surfaces of dust, dirt and small debris.

Bin Washer: Washes and disinfects waste bins, enhancing hygiene at collection points.

Bulky Waste Collection Vehicle with Grab Arm: Used for collecting and removing furniture, branches and other large items.
The demonstration was carried out by employees and specialised operators of the Municipality, who, with professionalism, conveyed to the children the technical and environmental aspects of the equipment.
3rd Activity – Healthy Nutrition
With the support of the President of the Roda-Sfakera Community, Gerasimos Nikokavouras, fresh fruit and water were offered to the children, conveying the message of healthy eating and body care as an integral part of environmental consciousness.
The Municipality congratulates the educators for their active participation and excellent cooperation, as well as for the pivotal educational role they played throughout the activity.
Special thanks are extended to the employees, the machine operators, and the Civil Protection team for their invaluable contribution to the success and safety of the event. Through such actions, we are making a meaningful investment in the education of our children, fostering respect for the environment, knowledge of local government functions, and the importance of personal responsibility.
