CORFU. The completion contract for the small Green Spot on Eptanissou Street, near the Tria Gefyria junction, which had remained unfinished, was signed by Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos and the project contractor on December 31.

(Central Corfu Municipality) The construction of the first Green Spot to operate on the outskirts of the town, undertaken by the Municipality of Central Corfu and Diapontia Islands, has entered its final phase.

The completion contract for the small Green Spot on Eptanissou Street, near the Tria Gefyria junction, which had remained unfinished, was signed by Mayor Stefanos Poulimenos and the project contractor on December 31.

The main part of the project was financed by the European INTERREG programme “WASTE RREACT” Greece – Albania 2014-2020, with the Ionian Islands Regional Authority serving as the implementing authority. However, due to procedural delays, the project had been stalled for more than two years.

The decision for the Municipality to complete the project using its own resources was made during a meeting held in October, chaired by the Mayor and attended by officials from the Ionian Islands Regional Authority and the INTERREG Managing Authority.

With the completion of the remaining work, the facility is expected to become operational and available to the public by Spring 2025.

The small Green Spot, which will be staffed by municipal employees, is estimated to handle a significant volume of recyclable materials sorted at source, from both businesses and households. It will feature several separate streams for materials such as paper, plastics, aluminum cans, glass, wooden packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, portable batteries, clothing and more.
