CORFU. The airport is being closed temporarily in order to proceed with the second phase of the restructuring and reconstruction of the runway.

Corfu Airport is closing again for 14 days, from January 16 to January 29, to continue the necessary restructuring and reconstruction work on the runway.

Similar work was carried out at the airport following the end of the 2023 tourist season, from November 21 to December 4, as part of the second phase of the project. The first phase of the work on the Corfu Airport runway was completed in the winter of 2022, with improvement projects continuing this winter to further enhance the safety level. According to Fraport Greece, this specific project will result in the ability to accommodate not only larger aircraft but also an increased number of flights.

Due to the suspension of the runway operation, flights will not take place during the aforementioned period, except for medical helicopter transfers. The air connectivity of the island will return to normal from the morning of Tuesday, January 30.

Fraport Greece states that the interruption of the runway operation is deemed absolutely necessary due to the size and complexity of the project, the terrain morphology, and the surrounding environment. These works are part of the Concession Agreement. After the completion of the works, the total length of the runway will be 2,475 metres.

By road only

Due to the upcoming works, residents, those travelling for work reasons, or those travelling abroad via Athens will be obligated to travel by road for the specified time period.
