Van knocks over archaeological display stand at Porta Riala
CORFU. From the video it seems that the van was parked when it started to move and hit the display stand.
A delivery van caused damage to the Antiquities Inspectorate information display stand at Porta Riála in the pedestrian area of Evg. Voulgareos St. a few minutes after 8 o'clock on Friday morning. As seen in the video footage, the vehicle rolled while it was parked, with the driver absent, possibly due to the release of the handbrake.
These display stands, which are placed at various points of historical interest, are particularly heavy, constructed from fireproof materials, and supported by two iron bases. The specific one was temporarily relocated to the Old Fortress for security reasons until the damage is repaired.
They were installed a few years ago at points along the perimeter fortifications: Skarpona Fortress, Sarantari Rampart, Agios Athanasios Platform, Raymoundos Rampart, at the gate of St. Nicholas, the Spilia Gate and near the location of the town's most important gate, the Basilica Gate (Porta Riala).
The signage was placed by Corfu Antiquities Inspectorate as part of the project "Works to Highlight Selected Sections of the New Fortress and Perimeter Walls of the Old Town of Corfu," which was funded under the NSRF (Business Programme of Western Greece, Peloponnese, Ionian Islands 2007-2013).
