CORFU. ND and SYRIZA election booths were damaged by persons unknown on Saturday night.

On the evening of Saturday, June 17th, unknown individuals caused damage to the election SYRIZA and ND election booths in Corfu.

They wrote slogans on the front of the SYRIZA booth, while they caused material damage to the corresponding ND booth.

The Corfu SYRIZA organisation posted the following statement on its Facebook Page regarding the incident:

"The 'tough guys' came out last night. We don't know if they are angry teenagers, paid thugs, far-right scum of any kind, or whatever else. The result of "they are all the same" can be clearly seen, a Siloam cesspool for anyone fishing in muddy waters or indulging in private interests. A similar incident occurred at the Nea Dimokratia booth, which we completely condemn."

Corfu SYRIZA MP Alekos Avlonitis issued the following statement:

"I unequivocally condemn and let democratic citizens judge for themselves the vandalism of the SYRIZA election booth in the centre of Corfu, which we discovered this morning.

Acts of intimidation, hatred and violence cannot be tolerated in a lawful state. Those who, with the rhetoric of hatred, fuel division in Greek society, are doing a great disservice to our country.

As SYRIZA, we have consistently and unwaveringly stood against attacks and violent actions. It goes without saying that such fascist practices are directed against democracy, and I expect an immediate and unequivocal condemnation from all political parties, social organisations and citizens, without asterisks or mitigations.

I am confident that the justice system, to which we have resorted as a party, will take appropriate action.

I expect everyone to stand together with us in defence of democracy, peaceful coexistence, stability in public life, and the free exchange of ideas and thoughts."
