CORFU. The Laiki Sispirosi party is bringing up the issue of pollution caused by the oilseed processing plant.

According to a letter published in both local and not local media and signed by residents, an oilseed processing plant, which has been operating since 1980 in the area, is causing air pollution with serious health effects.

In the same letter they expressed the fear that the plant's effluent is being dumped untreated, thus polluting the Tyflos river.

The letter was sent to the Corfu Regional Unit and the Industrial Development Directorate calling on the responsible authorities to immediately carry out the necessary checks, stressing that otherwise they will take action.

We consider the issue to be particularly serious and urgent and we will put it up for discussion at the Regional Council meeting because:

1. The problem continues and is getting worse without any interventions and checks being carried out.

2. It concerns the whole surrounding area, i.e. the residents of many other villages apart from Velonades who took the initiative.

3. As Laiki Sispirosi, we had informed the Regional Council several months ago about this issue, but the answer we received from the responsible Deputy Regional Governor was that us informing about the problem was not enough and that a complaint or some official notification from a responsible body was needed in order for checks to be carried out.

We therefore believe that it should be discussed today, since you are aware of it, and that there should be an update on the actions that the Regional Authority is going to take immediately and of which the residents should be informed.
