CORFU. Major Regional Authority resurfacing work in progress in North, Northwest and Central Corfu.
The Ionian Islands Regional Authority's three major road resurfacing projects are progressing satisfactorily in North, Northwest and Central Corfu but the project in South Corfu is still 'stuck' due to appeals lodged by contractors.
There was yet another postponement of the hearing, which will now be held in April, even though the work on the main Corfu-Kavos road other secondary roads is considered to be very necessary as it is in poor condition and is used by thousands of tourists every year.
Planned work
According to the Deputy Regional Governor for Technical Works Manolis Orfanoudakis, the contract for the work provides for resurfacing of 25%-30% of the 130km road network in the south - approximately 32-39km. "A large section of the road network will be resurfaced," he told Enimerosi. "The contracting of the work has been delayed due to appeals that have been lodged but there is no chance of the work not going ahead."
Incuded in the resurfacing work are the Ag. Deka-Stroggili and Tsaki-Benitses roads as well as Lefkimmi and elsewhere with the possibility of additional work. In addition to the resurfacing there will also be technical work contracted out - road markings, pavement construction, safety barriers, drainage etc. The total budget for South Corfu is just over €3m.
70% completed in Central Corfu
A large section of the work on Eth.Tzavros-Paleokastritsa Rd including subsidiary roads in Central Corfu, which were much in need of repair, has been completed.
This project was the first to be contracted out in December 2021. According to Manolis Orfanoudakis, 70% of the resurfacing work has been completed and 20% of the technical work. The roads remaining to be resurfaced are the following: Yiatrones Bridge-Kanalia, Aqualand-Ropa Valley-Paleokastritsa, Potamos, DebonoHotel-Temploni-Ropa Valley.
North Corfu
In North Corfu 40% of the technical work has been completed and 30% of the resurfacing of the main road network. Resurfacing will now continue on the Horoepiskopi-Karousades and Acharavi-Kassiopi roads.
In Northwest Corfu 90% of the technical work has been completed and almost 45% of the resurfacing. Technical work is being carried out in the Afionas area at the moment and resurfacing work will resume on the section Magoulades-Afionas-Agios Georgios at around the end of February.
In the east only resurfacing work has been done on the secondary roads of North Corfu with 40% having been completed.
The Deputy Regional Governor for Infrastructure said that work will shortly begin on support walls due to some having collapsed and immediately afterwards resurfacing will begin on the Sokraki-Zigos-Klimatia section of road.
It should be noted that all the contracts provide for the work to be completed in 18 months.
"Compared to the rest of the country, where work has stopped in several areas due to energy costs, we are progressing steadily and satisfactorily in Corfu," said Mr. Orfanoudakis.
