CORFU. "I΄m resigning from the office of Mayor of South Corfu, hoping that this move of mine will highlight the need for immediate action and will mobilise the process of solving the problems of our Municipality."

The full statement by Mayor Vassilis Himariotis:

'True to my commitments and the promises I made when I assumed office, I have worked hard and tirelessly to solve the problems faced by our Municipality. In particular, the issue of water management was and remains one of my most critical priorities, as it is directly linked to the daily lives of our citizens.

From the beginning of my term, I made repeated visits to ministries and responsible authorities, during which I was consistently assured that the water issue would be resolved promptly and effectively. Despite continuous promises and actions taken, the problem persists, and the situation remains unchanged, with citizens facing daily hardships.

It is impossible for me to remain Mayor while our fellow citizens struggle daily to survive without water. My conscience and my professional role as a doctor do not allow me to continue representing the Municipality when people are suffering from such fundamental problems. As a doctor, I fully understand the importance of an immediate resolution to these issues for the health and well-being of our citizens — but in this case, there is no immediate solution. The system's failure to respond to these needs weighs heavily on me personally.

Despite my efforts and the fight I put up to move things forward, bureaucratic delays and the slow pace of central administration do not allow for the prompt resolution of our problems. My disappointment with a system that does not grasp the urgent need for action has led me to this decision.

With a sense of responsibility and respect for the citizens, I announce that I will resign from the office of Mayor of South Corfu, hoping that this move of mine will highlight the need for immediate action and will mobilise the process of solving the problems of our Municipality.

I am proud of the effort we made, and I hope the country’s leadership will realise that regional municipalities like South Corfu deserve their attention — not just the central ones — so that the serious problems affecting local communities can be addressed.'"
