CORFU. The airport will remain operational until 7 February and then close again 8-22 February.

Corfu Airport will reopen temporarily on Wednesday 25 January after having been closed to flights since 10 January in order for Fraport to carry out work on the runway.

The first period of work will be completed tomorrow, 24 January, and the first flight scheduled to arrive is Sky Express from Athens at 08:00.

According to the NOTAM, the length of the runway will be shorter due to the work being carried out and 914 metres won't be operational. The length available for the period 24 January to 7 February will be 1,459 metres.

Closing again

The airport will remain open until 7 February and then close again between 8 and 22 February for work to continue. The closure will only affect domestic flights (Athens and Thessaloniki) as international arrivals begin on 26 Marc.

Airlifts

Whilst the airport is closed the only flights will be those with patients. However, during the first period of closure there were problems in two cases where the young patients had to go through an ordeal in order to be transferred to hospitals in Athens.

Even though it had been requested that there be a helicopter stationed permanently at the airport able to fly on a 24-hour basis during the two periods of closure for emergency transfers to Athens and Ioannina, up to now this has not happened.
