CORFU. During the periods 10-24 January and 8-22 February there will be no flights - only helicopter ambulance flights will be able to take off and land at the airport if necessary.

From tonight and for two weeks only helicopter ambulance flights will be able to take off and land at the airport - the runways will be closed for all other flights from 22:00 to allow reconstruction work to be carried out.

According to a statement from Fraport Greece, during the periods 10-24 January and 8-22 February the runway will be temporarily closed. During these times only helicopter ambulance flights will be able to take off and land at the airport if necessary, but other airport services for the public will operate as normal.

The announcement of the temporary closure was made before Christmas and provoked strong reactions from the opposition MPs and municipal councillors due to the serious problems being created for residents needing to travel.

In response Fraport said, "The temporary closure of the runway is absolutely necessary due to the size and complexity of the work, the physiology of the ground and the environment. Nevertheless, the period of time that operations will be suspended is the minimum that is required."
