CORFU. "The repair work and overhaul of the runway is absolutely necessary".
Fraport has issued a formal statement regarding the work at Corfu Airport which will necessitate the closure of the airport for two weeks in January and two weeks in February.
"As part of the company's multi-level upgrade of regional airports, the Fraport Greece Operational and Management Agency for Corfu Airport is proceeding the repair and an overhaul of the runway there.
During the periods 10-24 January 2023 and 8-22 February 2023 the runway will be temporarily closed. During these periods only helicopter ambulance flights will be able to take off and land at the airport if necessary, but other airport services for the public will operate as normal.
The aforementioned work will see a complete reconstruction of the runway at Corfu Airport in order to further increase safety at the airport. The completion of the work will allow not only larger aircraft but also an increased number of flights.
The work is part of the Concession Agreement. It is being carried out sustainably and with respect for the location as supporting sustainable development and social responsibility are basic principles for Fraport Greece.
The temporary closure of the runway is absolutely necessary due to the size and complexity of the work, the physiology of the ground and the environment. Nevertheless, the period of time that operations will be suspended is the minimum that is required.
Regulatory compliance and safety, at all levels, are the company's basic priorities. It should be noted that the work is part of a broader plan for additional upgrades to the already high level of safety and operations at the regional airports managed by Fraport Greece. As aforementioned, they are part of large-scale works to be carried out by the company with funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund."
