300kg of rubbish ΄fished΄ out of the sea at Old Harbour in Ipsos

CORFU. Tyres, plastic waste and glass and metal containers were all removed from the sea.

For World Clean Up Day on 18 September, Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality another coastal clean-up on 10 and 11 September.

There were two sea clean-ups for the "No single-use plastics in Greece" project along with a sea inspection (composition, bathymetry, sea organisms and polution) at the old harbour in Ipsos on the 10th and the fishing shelter on the 11th as well as a coastal clean-up.

Over the two days over 300kg of rubbish was removed from the sea - mainly tyres, plastic waste (cups, single-use straws, bottles, bags etc.), glass and metal containers plus other items. Everyone promised that work will continue to protect and improve the marine environment.

The Municipality thanked all those involved in the "No single-use plastics in Greece" project, including A.K.Laskaridis Charitable Foundation, Lidl Hellas and 'Dive in Action' Environmental Group. It also thanked Corfu Port Authority and the harbourmaster Commander Ioannis Stathouros for their valuable assistance with equipment and human resources.

The following were present at the clean-up on behalf of the Municipality: Deputy Mayor for European Programmes, Development and Digital Governance Panayiota Tzanne (Project Manager ICC) and the Municipal Scientific Consultant Viktoras Dimoulis (Assistant Project Manager ICC).
